Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the type of personal bankruptcy that allows a person to discharge debt. Not every type of personal debt will be discharged as part of the debt liquidation. When you file for Bankruptcy under Chapter 7, you may be able to keep your car and house if the payments are current. To qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, an individual needs to pass the "means test" which determines where their income falls in relation to a statewide median.
